How to make pounded yam from scratch

Pounded yam is one of the Nigerian “swallow” meals made from Boiled white yams and pounded. It’s made as an accompaniment for Nigerian soups. Traditionally, pounded yam swallow is made by pounding but these days due to the stress involved in pounding yams, most people are drifting towards the powdered version as a quicker alternative. Though the powdered version is quicker and more convenient, I’ve come to realize it tastes nothing like the real pounded yam made from scratch……yes i said it :D. here’s how to make pounded yam from scratch.

How to make pounded yam (Pictorials)

•Prep time:  10 mins
•Cook time: 15 mins
• Serves:      4

Utensils:::
• Mortar and pestle
• A medium sized pot

Ingredients:::
• 1 Medium Sized Yam tuber (Preferably old yam)
Water


Directions:::
Step 1: Slice and peel the skin off the yam


Step 2: In the medium sized pot, boil the yam with water till soft. Don’t let the water used in cooking the yam dry up as you’d need this while pounding.

Step 3: Scoop the hot yams into a motar and pound with the pestle. If the yam being pounded starts to become stiff, add some of the liquid used in cooking it into the mortar and keep pounding.

Step 4: Pound till the yam has a stretchy consistency and doesn’t stick when touched.

Step 5 : Your pounded yam is ready, serve with any Nigerian soup you choose.
