Nkate Cake (Groundnut cake) on Street foodie waka Ghana

Katty cake “Groundnut cake”
On my way back to the guest house I was staying in, I came across a Katty cake hawker. She sold the Sweet treat in a transparent glass box. Katty Cake in Ghana simply means “groundnut cake”. It reminds me of a popular street sweet sold back in the day in Nigeria known as “sisipelebe”.

There are two types of katty cake….the chunky katty cake which looks and tastes like the defunct UAC’s “Big Bite” and the less chunky katty cake which looks like “Sisipelebe ”, a popular street sweet back then in Nigeria(dunno if its still being sold). She sold each katty cake for 50 pesewas. Sincerely, I loved it and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Katty cake is made with three simple ingredients : Roasted groundnuts, granulated Sugar, Water. The sugar is melted in the water over low – medium heat till it caramelizes.
Smooth katty cake
Once it caramelizes, crushed groundnut (for the chunky) or groundnut paste (for the almost smooth) is stirred in. Once completely stirred in, the groundnut candy is turned out onto a wet pastry board and pressed down with a knife, spoon or spatula while hot (Don’t use your hands). As it cools, it’d harden. When it’s warm enough to touch, you can simply mark into shapes like triangles, squares and diamonds and break them off when it hardens completely. It’s as simple as ABC :).
