Catfish is really popular in Nigeria and it’s commonly known as “Point and kill”due to the fact that it’s mostly killed when it’s about to be cooked. It’s used for different delicacies such as catfish pepper soup, Nsala soup and a host of others . Preparing catfish for such dishes takes a different approach to achieve the best results. This is because the skin of the catfish is really slimy and has to be cleaned properly before use. Usually, the fish is killed, gutted and cut into sizable pieces by the seller in the market and all you have to do is to wash properly once you get home. Here’s how to prepare live catfish for cooking below:
Things Needed:
• A machete
• 1 large bowl
• Water
Directions:::
Step 1: Place the catfish in a large bowl. Strike the head of the fish till it’s out-cold and hold the head down firmly with one hand
Step 2: Chop the fins off with the machete and slice the fish into sizable pieces
Step 3: Turn the head upside down and slice open. Gut the fish by removing the contents of the head which includes the gills.
Step 4: Boil some water till very hot and soak the fish in it for about 3 minutes till you see all the slime come off
Step 5: Rinse with cold water and set aside for the preparation of any meal.

Congrats. The photographs – genuine beauty
Thanks FP 🙂
the hot water makes the fish very tough.
Yes it does which is good because the fish is really soft naturally and has the tendency to break in the pot when cooked. Hot water firms it up a little before cooking so that when it's being cooked it'd retain its firmness.
Won't d hot water peel the skin? I don't think you should use boiling water
My tots xactly.soaking in hot water n discarding is lik throwing away its nutrients. Jst washing throughly wit salt, lemon or lime will simply do d trick.Nice fotos though.
If you dont use hot water, when you eat the catfish, the slimy thing gums to your teeth. You can use lime but that depends on what you are making the catfish with. Lime is not meant to be tasted in every meal.
Salt all d way plsssssss
Dat tin abt d slim gumming 2 ur teeth is a big lie.i dont n hv neva used hot water, only salt n it removes all d slim u wont even feel it's slim anymore let alone taste it.
If u wash throughly wit salt ull neva feel or taste its slimness, hot water is absolutely nt necessary.
Wow! This is one of those useful sites
i've never tried using lime, lemon or just salt to wash cat fish before. Still trying to imagine it in my head… :s. For me, hot water seems like the best option cos it strips the slime off completely from the skin leaving the skin. if the water isn't over boiled, it won't peel the skin of the fish.
Hi Dobby, pls what exact make is your camera? Mind sharing?

you are most welcome
Thanks Oluchi :)….the only way to preserve catfish after it has been killed is by putting it in the freezer. would love to get recipes from you if you don't mind sharing 😉
Just soak the catfish in a salted water, leave for like 20 mins, wash many times in cold water and all the slims goes off completely leaving the skin very firm like a snail washed in lime or alum.
Thanks for the contribution anon. would give it a try and give an update.
you are just the best…have been trying to learn this
I clean mine with alum!Removes evry bit of slime.Jst dnt be over aggressive though, cos it cld also scrub away d skin.
Thanks Rita 🙂
Thanks for the tip Chinedu. i've never used alum but would definitely give it a try 🙂
Hmmm u know it reminds me of a snake. Don't think I can kill it oo. I remember my fiancé bringing it live. I was so mad kos he should have killed it at home. My dad was d one that killed n removed the slime. Muah to my dad. Then I made my mum cut off d head of one to confirm it was really dead before I proceeded with others
lol at "he should have killed it at home".
YOU COULD USE ASHES TO CLEAN UP THE SLIMNESS
Ashes ke! ha na wa o!
Using hot water remains d best for d firmness n slime removal.
Salt and put a little alum in water, soak d fish for 30minutes, bring it out and wash in cold water, the slime ll completely disappear.

Salt, alum and salt all the way. Warning! If you refrigerate it for too long, it will turn to ice fish no longer fresh fish. I am talking from experience. Using hot water is a quick action (sharp sharp) and it will per boil the fish and almost peel off the skin.
