Snail meat a.k.a Congo meat as it’s popularly known in Nigeria is a popular delicacy most people enjoy. Once cleaned & prepared, it can be added to Soups, Stews or even sauces. Another good way to enjoy this delicacy is by simmering the snails in peppered sauce and eating alone as an appetizer. Peppered snails would definitely get you taste buds watered. When cooking snails, it’s best not to overcook it so it doesn’t get too soft thereby losing that crunchy feel which is the best part. The average snail contains 80% water, 15% protein and 2.4% fat. It also contains essential fatty acids, calcium, iron, selenium; and magnesium. It’s also rich in many essential vitamins such as Vitamins A, E, K and B12 just mention a few. Snail meat can be used as an alternative to Beef and chicken.

snail meat….thats foreign here in Kenya, we do insects such as termites, grasshoppers but not snail.Im getting goose bumps just thinking about it!!!! My palate is less developed i bet!
l:)l! This got me cracking up. Your palate isn't less developed sweets, it's probably just new and I'm sure you'd luv it once you try it out. We also eat termites but I've never tried or seen grasshoppers eaten in nigeria (that's new too but I might be wrong) :).
People eat grasshoppers a lot in the north. Infact it is dried and sold in bowls just like ur grains in the northern markets. Its not new at all.
Really? i never knew we eat grasshoppers in Nigeria till now. Thanks for the clarification anon.
Definitely on my to-do list
do keep us updated once you try it out.
They eat locusts (like grasshoppers) in the north. It's called fara. BTW great looking recipe. Will try it with other meats like pork and beef. I'm guessing it'll be good.
Eat snails a lot but never thought of this…will surely try this out next time I wanna prepare a snail meal

you'd definitely love it. do let us know how it goes uje 🙂
I would really love to try dis. But d snails, water and salt combo, will it b wit d shell?
No you have to remove the shell first. it's got lots of slime which has to be cleaned off first.
@ anon 29/11/13. its locusts, not grasshoppers.
Very nice recipe but not alot of instruction on what to use to clean the slime and the process itself. Very bad for first timers as they might not know the snail is supposed to be squeaky clean before cooking. Give a little info on the pros and cons of using alum, lime, lemons and/or salt to clean. #safetyfirst
congo meat….simply the best.thanks dobby
You can say that again 🙂
