Recently, I had to make this traditional peanut butter dip for my Grand Aunt who was returning to the states. She loves her locally made peanut butter dip with garden eggs so much that she didn’t mind it spilling over to the “Excess luggage Zone”. The combination of Calabash Nutmeg, Ashanti and Dry pepper makes this dip really Hot and spicy. It’s usually eaten with kola nut, Garden Egg (Solanum melongena) or Coconut. In Igbo land, most gatherings, meetings & traditional weddings aren’t complete without Ose-oji (okwu ose) with Kola nut or Garden egg. It’s in fact an extremely rich cultural practice which signifies Unity, Peace, Sincerity & respect.

3. Add the oil intermittently and Mix thoroughly till it forms a smooth spreadable creamy paste. The oil loosens it thereby making it less stiff. Once you get your desired consistency, add the salt to taste and mix some more.

I actually like eat it with abacha too…yummz!
I love your blog. i have saved on my phone most of your recipes for easy reach in my kitchen. i do not claim to know what the ibo name for this is, but i have always known ose-oji as alligator pepper. correct me if i am wrong…..
You aren't wrong mrs L & thanks 4 pointing that out. Alligator pepper (pepper=Ose) is also known as Ose-Oji but Its is mostly used for (Oji)Kola nut in some parts of igboland. Peanut butter dip is also known as ose-oji but it's used for kolanut, garden eggs, coconut and a variety of other stuff.
Lol! Thanks ummibee. I've never tried it with abacha though but I might try it out sometime soon 😀

This is one of my fave Naija condiments. Even my 7 year old loves it. I didn't know you could enjoy it with coconuts!
Thanks Eya!

Thank you mary. Do stop by more often 😉
is Dry prawns (Oporo) also crayfish?
Hello Anon!
Dry prawns (Oporo)& Crayfish are totally different though in the Nigerian market, they are all superficially called "crayfish" because they used for the same purpose in meals due to their similar flavours. Prawns are more like shrimps but larger. Crayfish is way way smaller than prawns & shrimps and also priced cheaper as it's more common.
Good day dobby. Please could u post pictures of the ingredients? I don't know most of them and It will be hard for me to describe them in the market. Am sorry for the stress. Thanks a lot.
Sure i could nenye. Would do that this week.
Ahem!!! We are still waiting for the pictures please. Would love to try this, I see it being hawked on the streets of Lagos but cant buy it because one is not sure of the hygienic conditions it is prepared in. Please post the pictures so that those mischievous market women don't palm me off with the wrong stuff. Biko.
Hi aunty mo, the pictures are there already. Just click on any name above and you'd see the picture
