Boli served with obe ata din din and roasted Barracuda fish. |
When you love something so much you ensure you have ample supply of it at all times. This is one of the reasons why i decided to grow plantain on a small portion of borrowed farm land. Usually, i harvest the plantains while it’s still green so it’d ripen over a specific period of time. I never had issues with my plantain trees until recently when i noticed most of my ready to harvest plantains disappearing from the trees.
At first i thought thieves were at work so i decided to go early to the farm one day in order to keep an eye on what was really going on with the plantain trees. The farm is walled and gated so it was really puzzling how someone would jump over to steal plantains. lo and behold, i saw them…about four colorful monkeys jumping into the compound via the neighboring trees. At first i was shocked because i never expected seeing monkeys here in lagos. The shock kept me numb for a while but when i regained my composure, i decided to do what i had to do to protect my crops by shooing them away. I’d never forget what happened that day. The biggest among them noticed me and jumped down from one of the trees. This monkey chased me down the street and i ran like my life depended on it. I ended up buying a new pair of slippers because i lost my shoe that day. It was so embarrassing that i didn’t talk about it for a long time.These days i’ve learnt to adopt the live and let live way of life. I’ve got plenty plantain to go around, what more can i say.

Do you love plantain too? Apart from frying and boiling, here is another way to enjoy plantain. It’s even healthier cooking it this way too.
Ingredients:::
• Ripe/ Unripe plantain (As much as you like)
Directions:::
Step 1: Usually,boil is made locally on the streets with charcoal grill. For this, i usually use a grill at home. To prepare boli, Pre-Heat the grill to a temperature between 160°C-200°C. Wash and peel the plantain skin and place the plantains on the grilling rack. The rack should be placed very close to the burner. Grill for about 7-10 mins on each side making sure you check from time to time and turn the plantains on all the sides to ensure every part is evenly roasted. While roasting, you could also season and roast the fish alongside the plantains as shown HERE
Step 2: Once it’s ready, serve with peppered sauce (Obe ata din din) and grilled fish. Wash it down with hot or cold beverage and get ready to take a long nap because that’s what you’d do after taking this meal.

Hi dobby. Pls wah kind of grill do u use? Charcoal or electric? If its charcoal is it done inside the kitchen? I wld rly luv to get one
Hi Dobby, thanks for this tip. I don't have a grill at home, can i use the oven?
Omg! Dobby I really Lmao at your encounter with the monkeys. Sorry darling about the monkey invasion and the chase. I will remove my shoes and run off the moment I see them oo. Even something as small as a roach scares the living daylight out of me much less a monkey. Dobby you tried oo. BTW I love roasted plantain and groundnut a loooot but hubby prefers it with pepper sauce like yours. Never made it with fish. Will try it. Thanks
Dobby, please can I use my microwave? It has the grill option, I've grilled turkey in it b4,
Hi dobby please I av bin really hoping to know if I can use an oven n how if yes
Hello Nkem, boli requires direct heat to cook properly so using an oven wouldn't give you the same result.
Hi Anon, i use a gas grill. My oven has two compartments…The top layer which is the grill and the bottom layer which is the oven. For the grill, the fire with blue flame comes from above and heats whatever is being cooked directly just like the charcoal grill. Oven's don't heat up the food directly, it heats up the compartment which the food is being placed thereby cooking the food. Grilling with charcoal is mostly done outside and not inside.
lol! Thanks uniqpearl. I'm sure you'd like it once you do :).
Hi shakeerah, you can use an oven only if it has a grill or if there's a way you can put the oven rack close to the burner or flame especially if it is a gas oven otherwise i'd have to say no you can't use an oven.
Hi engee…If it has a grill, yes you can use it.
This will be for supper today. Thanks. I never knew I should pre-heat the grill! Maybe that's why my previous attempts were not as good as yours.
Ok, i can put the oven rack close to the burner then. Thanks for the calrification
How can you have heat without fire? It's not magic, it's science. Specifically, the science of induction, where strong electric fields can create heat. Induction cooktops use this to heat food without any flames or direct heat, cooking more efficiently than their gas or conventional electric cousins. Induction Blog
awww…………thanks dobstar….. always a life saver

I made the boli, grilled fish, grilled yams and grilled sweet potatoes and the pepper sauce. Your recipes are superb and did not fail at all. My grill refused to fire up and all my ingredients were set. I just pre-heated my oven and baked them in the oven. It was very delicious, believe me.
